Family Meals

So how do you pull it all together on those nights when …one child has scouts, one has lessons or a game, you have a meeting, and everyone needs to eat – really quick! My answer is to mix and match!

Using different cooking techniques, you can put your dinner on the table quickly every night.  Putting your family in the action plan gets the job done a lot quicker and with a whole lot more fun! This week's method is using Prepared Ingredients (to get a jump start on your meal).

Your grocery store Deli will have prepared roast beef, ham, and other meats and salads for you to select for quick dinner prep.

has a whole gallery of recipes using a variety of deli products plus tips on making your choices the very best for your family.

My very favorite prepared deli meat is rotisserie chicken.  This convenience entree can be used in many recipes so you can make several meals from one chicken (fast and frugal!). You can serve the chicken as roasted the first night then follow with...

Buffalo Chicken Wraps by AllRecipes.com gives you a wonderful recipe for an easy, spicy lunch or dinner!

KraftFoods.com has the best Chicken Salad.  Serve with crackers, over a bed of lettuce, or on a sandwich roll.  The sour cream makes this recipe a real family pleaser!

Chicken Pot Pie from Betty Crocker is this impossibly easy chicken pot pie for your week night supper.  You just can't beat the ease of prepared foods!

Pillsbury.com has 40 recipes for cooked chicken including this Chicken and Black Bean Tostizza.

Chicken Noodle Soup on Campbell's Kitchen.com is soup you can count on to be the best ever!  Included are Asian, Mexican, and Italian versions of this recipe.

Other prepared food ideas:

  • Pie crusts, puff pastry, and phyllo dough can be frozen for use when needed. Great for making a ho-hum dinner fantastic!
  • Bagged fresh cut-up vegetables make casseroles and stir-fries a snap to make.  Sides are ready in a flash, too.
  • Prepared marinades can be poured over meats placed in a plastic bag and stored in the fridge until you are ready to grill or cook.
  • Ready-made bags of salad make a great start to your dinner when topped with prepared meats, seafood, or cheeses.
  •  offers additional quick-fix solutions.  Check out their article 'For the time-pressed and hungry, pre-prepared ingredients mean dinner's in the bag'.  Sounds good to me! This article is written for singles but the techniques and products can be applied to families, too.

You see, the important thing is not that you fixed the entire meal from scratch but that you have time to eat together as a family!

Moms Meal Collection 30-Minute Menus

I have started a new feature on my blog to share my 30-minute menus for the upcoming week.  I plan to post the menus each Friday.  I usually create the week's menus on Friday so I can shop on Saturday and begin the week with Sunday's dinner.

You will find that I use several cooking methods, Mix and Match, to speed dinner prep including prepared foods.  When you have a bit more time, you can always substitute the prepared foods with your made-from-scratch recipes.

Jump on over to the MMC blog and see if any of the menus sound good to you!
